Love seems to shine ever more strongly in the languid light, and the whiteness of her gown mirrors the snowy landscape. Befitting this pristine season, we present nuptials dressed in silver and white, creating a calm oasis where love prevails in elegant simplicity.

There is something poignant about a wedding that relies on understatement. For example, the bride's dress has quiet lines, found in both the full skirt and long-sleeved bodice. Studded with tiny pearls and rhinestones, the Vera Wang design is most ethereal."

"In an all-white wedding, it's especially important to choose flowers with care," believes Sylvia Greenbaum, who arranged the blossoms here. "I like to use a mix of white and cream roses, in different sizes, for subtle variation." For the bride's bouquet she relied on oversized 'Virginia,' pure white 'Lady Liberty,' and creamy 'Mimi' spray roses. These also made their way into the littlest attendants' headdresses, supplemented by gardenias, freesias, and starlike Dendrobium orchids. "Each flower is wired," says Sylvia. "Sometimes I weave them into a wreath or simply pin a spray of blooms in a girl's hair." Either way, the tiny attendants seem haloed with a heavenly radiance befitting the occasion. The cake, likewise, is not an ornate affair. Rather than a crown of elaborate icing, the decoration consists of a wreath of variegated ivy and white bridal roses laid around the plate. Hydrangea buds painted silver add a bit of sparkle. (As with all the natural decorations for the cake, they must be removed before serving.) Carrying out the silver theme is a lustrous mix of table accessories, antique silver napkin rings, silver-edged Wedgwood plates, and etched-glass wineglasses from Accents Unlimited. The crushed-silk tissue napkins from Ann Gish. Votive candleholders, Charlotte Moss & Co. Crystal candlesticks, Tiffany & Co.

A Legacy of Designs
"In the 1920's every room of the house rustled with shimmering silks and taffeta ribbons - they adorned lampshades, became curtain tiebacks, decorated crazy quilts. Ribbonry was the darling of competent needlewomen everywhere, and publishers produced ribbon books galore.

Fortunately, their legacy lives on, providing a guidepost for a whole new generation of artisans. Liz Dircksen is one. Her California company, Angelsea, not only offers a vast selection of vintage ribbons but creates many that look old-fashioned but are actually new - jacquards embroidered with grapevines and silks seemingly plucked from a fairy-tale gown. Indeed, the idea for the gossamer jewel box did come from a fairy tale. "I set out to make a magic box based on a painting in one of my children's books," says Liz. "I hand-dyed a piece of silk sea green for the skirt and made the mauve petals of the water lily from some silk charmeuse. The lid of the box is woven grosgrain."

"Karyn Sanders re-creates the ribbon-trimmed boxes so popular in the past. "I basket-wove French ribbons on a vintage candy box and gave it a velvet grape corsage," she explains. "I covered the base in shell-pink satin moire ribbon and added a thin band of fluted silk as trim. "A hundred years ago, rosettes and ribbons cascaded from hats, spilled over necklines, and decorated many an element of the Victorian wardrobe, from dainty purses to shoes. Some of these elaborate bows were fashioned by dressmakers and milliners, but others were the artistry of needlewomen who learned their craft through the pages of 'Godey's Lady Book' and other popular magazines. More than a tuck here, a stitch there - ribbonwork is by no means a simple craft. It requires a dexterous hand, a patient temperament, and an inspired teacher like Candace Kling, a talented artist, researcher, and lecturer who stitched these fancies using an old pattern book. Called 'The Art and Craft of Ribbon Work,' it has been reissued for us all to share."

"More than four-and-a-half yards of silk organdy ribbon are looped to form this chignon bow. Each side of the ribbon is stitched to make a casing, which is threaded with very thin beading wire to give the bow its spidery shape."

"As soon as I could walk, my mother, a painter and designer, took me antiquing in and around Memphis,where I grew up, "she recalls.
