Chimes
Gathered to Our Hearts
by Catherine Calvert

Passion gives rise to poetry as surely as sun drives flowers - didn't we all spend hours in the throes of young love plotting poems that gave vent to our hearts? For some more accomplished poets, seek out a new collection, "Love's Witness: Five Centuries of Love Poetry by Women." Compiled by Jill Hollis, the book is a fine flowering of poetry that traces love in all its tremors and terrors, ecstasies and confusions. Drawing upon writers as varied as Queen Elizabeth I, Edith Wharton, and Christina Rossetti, Hollis has gathered works that range from the wry to the rapturous, full of lines that sing, as Stella Gibbons wrote, of "this trance of love, when the whole world hovers like a dove,/ And gentle darkness shuts the eyes/With kisses soft as butterflies.
